This device was commissioned to us by a Kouo, a London-based startup that aims to create a pair of headphones that integrate a solution to monitor mental health indicators from brain activity and heart rate. The brief was for set of Bluetooth headphones that would also be an EEG brain activity sensor and HR sensor, seamlessly to the user. The headphone should be capable of being used independently, or together with an app that collects EEG data and analyses it with the help of OpenBCI. Industrial design would be provided in collaboration with LUMA-ID.
The design included a Microchip Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart radio, an application-specific Analog Front End for the EEG pads, a custom heart rate sensing circuit, microphone with noise reduction and a general purpose MCU for UI, system coordination and data sampling.
